Dr Dou has administrative, man-management experience having worked in various capacities in the Taipei Municipal Chronic Disease Hospital for 10 years. During this period he established the standard laboratory procedure for M.TB. In 2005, he joined the Division of Clinical Research at NHRI. Dr. Dou's major interest is to understand the pathogenesis of tuberculosis and develop vaccine against tuberculosis.

TB is still a worldwide problem. In April 1993, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared TB as a global emergency. It has been estimated that about one third of the world's population has been infected with the tubercle bacilli, 3 million were die from the disease. TB also is a major health problem in Taiwan. A systematic surveillance of the mycobacterium tuberculosis strain and the transmission pathway are unclear. In order to improvement of TB control, we are trying to establish a systematic surveillance of tuberculosis strain in Taiwan. A MIRL laboratory project will be established to integrate into the currently MIRL system which already include bacteria, fungus, and virus. The target of first stage of this project (2006-2008) will be to screen the strain distribution of mycobacterium tuberculosis by RFLP/ spoligotyping method on clinical isolate from 5 major hospitals in Taiwan. This project will provide important data on the transmission mode, strain distribution of mycobacterium infection in Taiwan
