Lauderdale obtained her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY majoring in medical technology with specialty in microbiology. She obtained her doctor of medical science (Ph.D.) degree from Juntendo University in Tokyo, Japan. She worked at Cornell University, New Hampshire State Public Health Laboratories, and University of S. Alabama Medical Center before joining the Division of Infectious Diseases (formerly Division of Clinical Research) at NHRI in 1999.

Research Interests

Our research focuses on phenotypic and genotypic surveillance of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. The main project is the Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (TSAR), which was implemented in 1998 and is conducted every two years to monitor resistance trends and detect emerging resistance. TSAR collects clinical bacterial pathogens isolated from inpatients and outpatients of medical centers and regional hospitals located throughout Taiwan (Fig.) for centralized quantitative antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Data from TSAR data have been used to promote national action in controlling antimicrobial resistance.  Correlation of antimicrobial usage with resistance level is also being investigated.

Antimicrobial use in agriculture creates another reservoir of resistant bacteria in the community. Therefore we have also been tracking the resistance trends of different Salmonella serotypes and Campylobacter spp., the two common zoonotic pathogens that are transmitted from contaminated food supplies to humans.

In addition to the surveillance projects, our laboratory also conducts molecular characterization on selected resistant bacteria to study their epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance. These include fluoroquinolone resistant bacteria, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE).
